Medication Assisted Treatment Program
A Whole Person Approach to Substance Use Disorder Treatment
Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) uses medications such as Suboxone (a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone) and naltrexone in conjunction with counseling and behavioral therapies. MAT is a holistic approach to the treatment of substance use disorder and can be an effective tool for both detox and recovery maintenance.
While MAT is primarily used for the treatment of addiction to opioids, it can also be effective in treating alcohol use disorder. The prescribed medications help normalize brain chemistry and body functions, block the euphoric effects of opioids and alcohol, and alleviate physiological and psychological cravings.
MAT is an evidence-based treatment option, not simply the substitution of one drug for another. As an individually-tailored program of medication and behavioral therapy, this approach has been shown to sustain recovery, reduce opioid overdose and help clients lead a self-directed life.
The MAT program at Santa Fe Recovery Center integrates with our Residential and Outpatient Programs and is included in our intake assessment along with the appropriate paperwork and lab work. Those who meet the requirements for MAT will work with a team of licensed physicians, PAs and nurse practitioners to navigate the potential benefits and complexities of medication use. MAT Program participants also have regular follow-up appointments with their prescriber.
Clients on methadone will need to transfer their services to one of the local clinics in Santa Fe: New Mexico Treatment Services – 505-982-2129 or Santa Fe Heath Services – 505-820-9970.
